Design Focus: Very Good & Proper

by Katie Treggiden in Bespoke stories

Ever been in a restaurant and wanted to buy the chair you were sitting on? Well, now you can.

Patrick Clayton-Malone created design brand Very Good & Proper to supply the furniture for his restaurant chain Canteen. It made sense, then, that the company was at designjunction, launching the Canteen pendant. Its products were also on show at Canteen’s pop-up restaurant, a collaboration with Transport for London.

Explaining the connection between the two businesses, Clayton-Malone claims that it’s all about quality and Britishness. ‘Our democratic, welcoming and considered interiors celebrate British design and craftsmanship,’ he says. When it comes to design, his inspiration comes from schools, libraries and town halls. He’s a big fan of the ‘classlessness of community buildings such as the Royal Festival Hall’.

What that means is excellent value for money. ‘Very Good & Proper was established to create practical, beautiful and reasonably priced products that last a long time,’ he says. What more can you ask for?
