Typically, a dining table has a circular, oval, square or rectangular tabletop – each offering themselves a different mood and feel. A circular table often has smaller proportions, bringing an intimate feel to the piece – the same can be said with a square tabletop. Ovoid and rectangular tables tend to have long, slim proportions that will host large dinner parties with ease.

A luxury dining table design can be broken into two parts – the legs and the tabletop. The tabletop is the most immediate element that you will notice with its large, luxurious surface. The legs can take on many different forms – ranging from slender, elegant legs that support the tabletop at each corner, to a delicate or sculptural central leg for a more modern take on a luxury dining table design.

Table legs often decide the weight and dominance of a dining table – slim, delicate legs in any material or shape will bring a sense of lightness, whereas legs that have large proportions in dark or thick materials will tend to have a more dominant presence in the room. Designers have created table legs in many forms – from plate glass to woven metal and carved wood.

The table legs can form part of the table frame, within which the tabletop is inlaid – this can provide a dining table with a high-end, luxurious look as there is much craftsmanship in joining two materials in this way, and the end result is often a sleek and modern twist on a traditional method.

The tabletop and legs can be made in the same material for a clean and subtle look – or they can be made in contrasting materials for added texture, becoming a focal point of the room. Tabletops have a stunning organic quality with a beautiful warmth when constructed with wood that shows off its unique grain and texture. Equally, for a more modern look, a wooden table can have a lacquer finish, in either matt or gloss, and can add a pop of colour to a room should it be required. A metal tabletop can add either an industrial look when left in its natural state, or has an intriguing and sumptuous feel when it has been brushed.

Marble is another stunning option for a dining table as it has a timeless appeal and a wonderful way of playing with light. Marble can look utterly contemporary in white Carrara, or deep, rich and decadent in brown Emperador or black Marquinia marble.

A glass tabletop is a modern yet luxurious choice for a dining table, particularly as it has the advantage of seeming light and spacious despite the substantial size of a typical dining table. A designer will often use a glass tabletop as a way to show off an interesting base – as the glass will allow the sculptural legs or base to be appreciated from all angles. Glass can also have several finishes applied to it – such as smoked or bronze, as well as being ultra-clear, which will bring the light, reflective quality of glass whilst adding colour and some opacity.
