A desk is the centre piece of any home office, whilst also being a beautiful and functional addition to a library or living room. A desk must have enough space to spread out one’s work, however, contemporary desks are designed for a variety of spaces and uses. Some desks are a modern update on a classic silhouette, whereas other designs seem to have totally reinvented what it is that we expect to see in a desk.

Bespoke Desks

Deciding whether the luxury desk requires storage - and how much - will narrow down the options, as some contemporary desks simply consist of the tabletop. Desk storage comes in the form of drawers, whether that is a single, central drawer that sits directly beneath the tabletop or whether there is a stack of drawers underneath the surface. Some designs have a single stack of drawers down one side - giving an asymmetrical charm to the piece, and others provide more generous storage, with a stack of drawers on each side.

A desk without drawers can have more simple, clean profile that suits a contemporary home or office, and is a more flexible piece in the home.

The materials that a desk is made from will greatly dictate the mood and feel of the piece - with a wooden desk having a weighty, organic feel that is almost a modern take on a traditional desk design, whereas other materials such as metal, glass, leather and marble have a more contemporary edge. A glass top, or even a desk made entirely in glass, has an inherent lightness thanks to its transparent quality, which can make a large piece, such as a desk, seem less solid and heavy...

Luxury desks range from entirely minimal to highly detailed and intricate, as some bespoke desks have a pared back essential nature, whereas others are given flourishes that add texture, shape and contrasts. The drawer handles can be made to disappear, or made into a feature. The tabletop can have inlays in contrasting materials, or be an uninterrupted expanse. The legs can remain a functional element in the design, or can be curved, twisted and shaped to become more sculptural…
