A sideboard is a truly functional piece - providing ample storage that is suitable for almost any room of the house. The living room, dining room, library, office and bedroom can all be improved with the perfect sideboard. A sideboard typically has rather unobtrusive proportions, being long and low, which both provides storage and a surface on which to display items.

Bespoke Sideboards

Typically a luxury sideboard has cupboard doors or drawers - or a combination of both - that allows items to be discretely and easily hidden from view behind a beautiful facade. Some sideboards have been designed for specific functions - such as those with a specific cutlery drawer that would be the perfect solution in the dining room. Others have a more general appeal that makes it suitable for all uses. The interior of each sideboard will vary, with a combination of internal drawers, glass shelves and other organisational elements.

Varying greatly in shape, style and materials there is a sideboard to suit every room. The designs available range from stark and minimalist, to retro and with several that are highly decorative. Often made in solid wood, many sideboards have details or elements in different materials - a marble or glass tabletop perhaps, or metal feet and drawer handles.

Contemporary sideboards can come with or without legs, which greatly changes its look. A sideboard with legs tends to have a lighter, more spacious look - and a more compact body whereas a sideboard that sits directly on the ground will provide a more generous storage space, as well as a more solid look. For a Scandinavian or mid-century modern look, select a sideboard in a natural wood finish with slim, tall legs, and for a minimalist, ultra-contemporary look choose a sideboard that has rigid lines that rests on the ground, with cleverly concealed door handles and a grid pattern.

The sideboard can be used to add character and colour into a scheme - with a huge array of finishes to choose from. A natural wood finish will vary greatly depending on the wood type and how the designer incorporates the grain into the overall design of the piece. Canaletto walnut has a distinctive striped effect that creates a regular and intricate pattern, whereas another wood will have a more fluid, organic grain that looks more earthy. Wood can be used in many ways, including being crafted into ridges, or finished with a glossy lacquer in an interesting shade for a rich, vivid pop of colour.

More detailed pieces range from those decorated with a floral motif for a more historical look, to a grid pattern, inspired by contemporary art, that has an inherently cool, contemporary feel. There are several designs that incorporate multiple colours along the long facade of the sideboard - doors that are painted in a range of complementary shades, or with facades that have a mosaic effect in several hues.
